poison ivy	In the Hayes White House, profanity, tobacco, and liquor vanished. Although the people blamed his wife, "Lemonade Lucy" Hayes, the President took the credit himself. But he could joke about it. Once, when he was red from poison ivy, he made it a point to tell his audience that his skin appeared so, not because he had abandoned his principles, but because of the poison ivy [1a].

Not surprisingly, the lack of alcohol in the White House inspired many comments, including one from Secretary of State Evarts. Having just dined at the White House, he was asked if he had a good time: "Splendid! Water flowed like champagne." [3a]
